Mahjong Solitaire: instructions and practice

Choose a round of Mahjong Solitaire and settle into its rules. Remove all forty layered tiles in matching pairs. Use the example below to understand a decision. Treat the first round as a chance to learn the controls. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

Match number-marked tiles in a compact layered layout. The starting arrangement has a complete removal route, but your choices can still block later pairs.

An idea for your next attempt

Keep the stated aim separate from side details such as animation or appearance. Progress is measured by the game’s own completion or scoring rules. Keep the objective visible.

What counts as success

Remove all forty layered tiles in matching pairs. Use the instructions to see which actions move you towards it. Keep the controls in easy reach.

From the start of a round

  1. Choose a tile with no covering tile and a free left or right side.
  2. Choose a matching free tile.
  3. Uncover lower layers.
  4. Use hints or undo.

Keyboard and screen controls

Tap two free matching tiles. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Use one clear input at a time.

Work through an example

Equal symbols cannot pair while one is covered. Your next round may have a different position, so inspect it before acting. Check the stated objective.

Pay attention to this rule

Layer and side access matter as well as symbol matching. Take a moment to reassess the position before continuing. Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round.
