15 Puzzle: rules and examples

Open 15 Puzzle, check the instructions and begin a round. Arrange 1 to 15 in reading order with the empty square at the bottom right. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Read the objective before making your first input. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions.

Try a more deliberate round

Keep the stated aim separate from side details such as animation or appearance. Progress is measured by the game’s own completion or scoring rules. Notice the feedback after each input.

The goal to keep in mind

Arrange 1 to 15 in reading order with the empty square at the bottom right. Read that aim before choosing your first action. Check the rules when you are unsure.

From the start of a round

  1. Select a tile directly beside the empty square.
  2. The tile slides into the gap; diagonal moves are not allowed.
  3. Use Undo to step back one move.
  4. Finish the ordered board, or choose New puzzle.

Using the playing area

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. Keep the playing area visible while using these controls. Avoid pressing the same control repeatedly while a move is being processed.

Learn from a sample situation

When the gap is in the last square, only the tile above it and the tile to its left can move into it. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Look for the relevant detail.

Check this before moving on

A distant tile cannot jump across other tiles. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round.
