Reversi: a guide for your next round

Make Reversi your next activity in the game library. When neither player has a legal move, the player with more discs on the board wins; equal totals are a draw. Look at what changes after your first action. Identify the playing area and the controls you need. Look at what changes after your first action.

Practice with a purpose

Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal. Refer to the controls when needed.

What you need to achieve

When neither player has a legal move, the player with more discs on the board wins; equal totals are a draw. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. Review the board or playing area as it changes.

How a round unfolds

  1. Black moves first. Highlighted cells show legal placements.
  2. Place a disc to trap one or more opponent discs in a straight line.
  3. Every trapped line from that placement is flipped.
  4. If a player has no legal move, the turn automatically passes.

Input guidance

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. A careful first action helps you become familiar with the layout. Check any mode label before starting.

One way to understand the rules

Black–white–empty can become black–black–black when Black plays in the empty square. Use the example as a guide rather than a substitute for reading your board. Take a moment to compare.

Check this before moving on

A placement must flip at least one opposing disc; simply placing beside your own discs is not enough. Take a moment to reassess the position before continuing. When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round.
